While this does mean that you won’t be able to get a something to eat here, if you’re looking for a pure dance environment instead of a bar scene, this is the place to go! (Note however: there are convenience stores and restaurants within walking distance if you’re really hungry!) Run by the two DJ’s Dola & Mambo Soul, Salsa Underground is a place for those who want to have access to salsa music only no bachata, zouk, or anything else here! (Okay, maybe Cha-cha music will make the occasional appearance.) This event is not held at a restaurant, it’s held at a dance studio, which means the venue is specifically created to be hospitable to dancers. Not weekly: held every 1st and 3rd Sunday.Location: Capital Ballroom, 7800 Wisconsin Ave, Bethesda, MD 20814.or come to the event before 8:00 PM check the event page for details.)
On a more personal note, it’s in this place where I taught my first salsa classes as a beginner’s instructor several years back.and the salsa class tends to be split between a beginners and intermediate level meaning that you won’t have to worry as much about being in a class way above, or below, your skill level. While the thought of dancing at a bowling alley may seen strange to some, to those who’ve been to this location, it’s hard to imagine it any other way! The classes here are split between bachata and salsa. This social has existed for well over a decade, being run by DC Dance Scene Legends Earl Rush, Lee El Gringitio, and Kat La Gata.Location: Lucky Strikes DC, 701 7th St NW, Washington, DC 20001.Cost: Free! (Though please support the bar and restaurant!).The large amount of time given to freely dance as well as the fact that this isn’t held too late at night makes this a convenient and awesome event to try out. They dance style taught varies each week. As with most of the socials listed here, a class tends to be taught for the first hour or two before the main dancing starts.
If you believe I’ve forgotten something, please let me know and as soon as I can, I’ll update the list. This page will be updated regularly as I’m made aware of (or more likely, reminded of) places to dance in the area. that way anybody who is a fan of that page, FB friend or not, can see it. I’m making this list public especially since the main goal is to place this on my Basic Steps page. so that if anyone does ask what places to go to, I can summon this list at once. Since I’ve pretty much devoted my dancing mission to help newer dancers get acclimated into the dance scene, I’ve taken it upon myself to keep a list of places to dance.
I tend to be able to think of a few places off the top of my head, but I know full well that there are several important places that I’m missing. One of the things I keep getting asked often is where to dance in the DC Metro Area.
